CASE : FLORASCEND

THEME

This theme reflects on our current existence, which is often heavily dominated by technology—something we are increasingly dependent on. In this modern landscape, we sometimes lose our connection to ourselves, each other, and nature. The thought leader behind FLORASCEND is to explore how we can rediscover and restore these connections. This theme invites contemplation on what we can learn from nature, approached with depth, humor, and without the usual airy-fairy notions. Through artistic expression and co-creation, I aim to create a space where people can be inspired by the cleverness, impact, beauty, and wisdom of nature.

SITUATION

The Dutch Decompression is an event that brings together the global Burning Man community, based on its 10 principles. This event is organized with, for, and by the community, featuring 30 team members, 120 performers and artists, 27 art projects, 12 art grants, and 130 volunteers.

MY ROLE

As the creator of the theme "FLORASCEND," along with its concept and artistic philosophy, I served as Co-Event Lead and Creative Producer. I was responsible for overseeing the organization and execution of the event, including finances, location, logistics, and coordinating the teams for art, decoration, and programming.

APPROACH

The programming took place across 5 spaces through co-creation and cross-pollination with (inter)national artists, performers, visual artists, dancers, VJ’s, DJ’s, and musicians. I ensured the creative conditions were in place so that the team had the autonomy to organize their contributions. I monitored parameters such as budget and safety, providing guidance when necessary.

RESULT

The event sold out within 4 hours and was considered the best edition yet! Two "crafternoons" (creative afternoons for decoration) contributed to a creative explosion. It was an exceptionally smooth event, without any incidents.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • “FLORASCEND” - Ceremony: I produced the show featuring 16 performers, including dancers, spoken word artists, a light artist, musicians, pole dancers, and a DJ, creating a large spectacle.

  • “The Circle of Growth”: An edible artwork designed for participants to walk through, created by Emanuel van de Ven.

  • “The Shit Show”: An interactive artwork that engaged participants with the theme of ‘urgent needs,’ designed by Bibi Bankendaal.

LEARNINGS

It was fulfilling to bring this concept to life and exciting to foster an experiment with positive activism in the nighttime sphere. The event prompted participants to reflect, which was the goal! I appreciated working with a large team, as this approach proved effective and greatly stimulated creativity.
